Want to fight big corporations, hold elected officials accountable and protect the pocketbooks and health of Hooisers?

The Sierra Club, the nation’s largest and most effective grassroots environmental organization, seeks an organizer for our ground-breaking, history-making Beyond Coal campaign in Indiana. This key position will help build winning campaigns to move Indiana off coal and transition to a clean energy future. The ideal candidate is creative, flexible, and has willingness to travel. In additional to shaping the grassroots organizing strategy and tactics, this person will train volunteer leaders, build relationships with allied organizations and elected officials, and design cutting edge actions. Candidates should have 1-2 years of organizing experience, and a passion for environmental, social change,corporate accountability and public health. This position is based in Indianapolis.

Through education, grassroots organizing and nonviolent direct action, RAN’s campaigns focus on catalyzing market and investment pressure to transform corporate and government policies and behavior in support of forests, the climate and human rights.

Qualifications:
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as great care and judgement for tone
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Positive and professional attitude
  • Experience with database management
  • Enthusiasm for RAN’s mission and work is essential

  • Advanced experience with Raiser’s Edge and ability to run effective queries

We are seeking candidates who have the desire and skills to work on exciting grassroots organizing issues. Candidates must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal), demonstrated leadership skills and have professional experience in direct action organizing techniques and implementation. Candidates need the following; ability to work independently; ability to travel extensively throughout the state and willingness to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends. The position emphasizes the skills sets of a community organizer. Familiarity with New England coastal and ocean issues are a plus.

  • Work under the supervision of the Director of Chapters to support and build Surfrider Foundation’s volunteer chapter network within the states of CT, RI, MA, NH and ME.
  • Coordinate the statewide efforts of chapters within the regions.
  • Engage our chapter network in Northeast Regional Ocean Council issues in coordination with the New England Ocean Action Network.
  • Assist in growing regional membership
  • Facilitate and train chapter volunteers in direct action organizing techniques including, but not limited to; campaign planning, recruitment, strategy, tactics and program implementation.
  • Represent Surfrider Foundation at local administrative hearings and public events when necessary.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Development, develop and maintain positive relations with the regional funding community.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Chapters to develop and facilitate statewide training conferences for the regional Chapter network.
  • Coordinate with the Ocean Program Manager and Mid-Atlantic Policy Manager to promote regional ocean policy issues (throughout the chapter network) where appropriate.
  • Administrative Responsibilities include, but are not limited to; writing newsletter articles, grant reports, oversight of chapter governance reporting and social media outreach.

The Rainforest Action Network (RAN) is an effective corporate campaigning organization looking for a savvy campaigner that will to defend our climate and environment by challenging the largest global banks to shift their money away from fossil fuels and toward clean, renewable energy production. The chosen candidate will work with campaigners and support teams, create and foster relationships with allied organizations and communities, research campaign opportunities, and implement strategies to influence tough corporate targets.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work on and provide campaign strategies and tactics against tough corporate targets
  • Coordinate volunteers and empower and motivate grassroots activists
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with strategic local, regional, national and international NGOs
  • Coordinate non-violent direct actions
  • Stay abreast of climate, energy, finance and human rights issues
  • Supervise interns and volunteers

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 3 years of campaigning and grassroots organizing experience
  • Expertise or demonstrated interest with issues including corporate social responsibility, climate change, finance, human rights, fossil fuel and renewable energy politics
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking, writing and networking skills
  • Demonstrated expertise in online organizing and campaigning
  • Proven track record of working with diverse coalitions and coordinating with activists from various backgrounds
  • Commitment to non-violent direct action
  • Proficiency in English; additional language skills a plus
