Buck Island Reef National Monument (BIRNM), located on the island of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, is seeking applicants for the position of Sea Turtle Research Assistant (RA) to conduct sea turtle research and monitoring. This will be the 26th year of the Buck Island Sea Turtle Research Program (BISTRP), a long-term monitoring, research and conservation project supported by the National Park Service (NPS), Buck Island Reef National Monument. BIRNM is a nesting beach for hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), green (Chelonia mydas), leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), and loggerhead (Caretta caretta) sea turtles.

RAs must be available from 15 July through 4 October 2013 (applicants must state availability in their cover letter) and are expected to stay the length of the project. This is a highly competitive project that is physically and mentally intense, aimed at individuals who want to make ecology/resource management their career. RAs must work equally effectively as a team and alone.

The primary function of the RAs will be to assist NPS staff in conducting the BISTRP. RAs will provide assistance to the NPS staff in the collection and processing of field data. Buck Island’s nesting beaches will be monitored 7 days/week sundown to sunup, by a joint team of NPS staff and RAs. Access to the island is by boat only, where there are minimal facilities. All nesting turtles will be encountered; biometric data will be collected on turtles, physical data will be collected on nest locations, and animals will be tagged (inconel and PIT).  Nests will be excavated to determine hatch success. Imperiled nests will be relocated as part of continuing research to determine optimal relocation conditions. In addition to BISTRP objectives, interns will provide assistance to NPS staff and collaborators in the deployment of acoustic and satellite tags and aid in the collection of tissue and blood samples as part of directed research to assess sea turtle health. RAs may also participate in snorkel surveys for foraging sea turtles and/or assist in sea turtle stranding response incidents.

Each RA will be scheduled for up to 5 nights on the beach, or 4 nights and 1 day of lab/office work (data entry and sample processing), on a dynamic schedule. RAs will be responsible for field equipment care and maintenance. RAs are also responsible for weekly daytime monitoring of beaches at The Buccaneer Hotel, their residence, recording activities using GPS. RAs will also conduct outreach to hotel guests and will write a report at seasons end summarizing turtle nesting activities at The Buccaneer Hotel.


RAs will receive two meals/day and lodging from The Buccaneer Hotel at no cost to the RAs. A small weekly stipend will be allotted to each RA ($100), and travel costs will be covered by the NPS. RAs need to seriously consider their finances before applying to these openings; it will not be possible to work locally while conducting RA duties.

Qualifications Required – Must:
– Communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing
– Have biology training/background
– Collect data and maintain records precisely according to standardized protocol
– Enter and analyze data (written and computer database format)

– Be in excellent physical shape
– Be able to persevere under stressful conditions
– Work outdoors, day and night in isolated conditions, and in adverse weather.
– Walk in the sand up to 10 kilometers/night; climb rocks; stoop, kneel and stand on soft substrate and in cramped conditions.
– Have a strong work ethic
– Be able to work all night and on weekends
– Be able to lift and move heavy objects
– Operate communications equipment properly (cell phone, hand-held VHS radio, marine radio)
– Be able to swim; crew a boat in open water conditions
– Have a valid US driver’s license

Hillslope hydrology component of the Hubbard Brook REU: We are seeking applicants for an REU position at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire.  The program is a multidisciplinary project where students participate in a research project and also engage in outreach projects designed to help develop skills in communicating ecosystem information to broad audiences. The program runs from May 29 through August 7, 2013 and all students are expected to be in attendance on the start date. Students receive a $5000 stipend for the 10-week program, as well as free housing. Food costs are paid by the participants and run approximately $42/week. Students live at Hubbard Brook Research Foundation’s Pleasant View Farm adjacent to the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest.

The overall objective of the hillslope hydrology project is to document varying flowpaths that water takes through soils in its journey through hillslopes on its way to streams. An REU student will work closely with a team with graduate students installing and operating tensiometers and pore water samplers, and collecting and characterizing soil samples. The approach of this project follows the emerging discipline of hydropedology, with implications for understanding water quality regulation and spatial patterns in forest habitats. Position Description: The Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory is now taking applications for a halftime GIS/GPS Intern / halftime student in 2013.  We are looking for a student who has solid experience with GIS and/or GPS.  Experience with IT would be a plus.  Fifty percent of the intern’s time will be spent on several projects: 1) assisting the GIS/GPS Coordinator with training users to use handheld GEOXT GPS units, entering and reviewing metadata, downloading and post-processing files from GPS units, mapping sites, creating maps, and helping with other mapping related projects, 2) overseeing upkeep and troubleshooting of the Barclay computer lab, and 3) occasionally assisting with the maintenance of sensors at permanent weather stations at remote sites.  The remaining fifty percent of the intern’s time will be spent on an Independent Research Project OR a short course and a smaller independent research project.  The research project could be focused on field biology or, alternatively, it could be a mapping/GIS project.

Conditions: We are looking for someone who is not afraid of hard work and has a sincere interest in GPS and GIS.  The intern must be detail-oriented, skilled with computers, and be familiar with GIS software. The chosen student will work an average of 20 hours/week on GIS and GPS projects, computer lab upkeep, and weather station assistance, and an average of 20 hours/week on their independent project and/or short course.

Dates and Cost: This program runs from approximately June 9 to August 16 (10 weeks).  The total Educational Fee for the summer is $5100.  RMBL covers half this fee, as the student is a half-time intern.  The student is responsible for the other half of this fee:  $2550.  The educational fee covers Room, Meals, and Station Fees for a total of 10 weeks (maximum) plus tuition for 5 credits of Independent Research.  The student is responsible for parking fees, laundry fees, and other miscellaneous expenses.  The student will be reimbursed $200 for travel expenses.

Registration for RMBL’s 2013 undergraduate research program is now open at: www.rmbl.org. Follow the link for ‘students’

Each year RMBL matches approximately 40 students with mentors from around the world.  Students have opportunities to work on a wide array of ecological and evolutionary field projects.  Additionally, students have the opportunity to supplement their research project with additional training in field ecology or wildlife biology.  RMBL provides REU funding for approximately 10 students.  RMBL also makes available additional scholarships.  Consequently financial need should not preclude students from applying.


This is a wonderful opportunity for students thinking about a career in the sciences.  RMBL is located in Gothic, Colorado, a stunningly beautiful location in the Rockies.  Because we host approximately 100 graduate students and senior scientists, undergraduates have an opportunity to learn about graduate programs from around the world.  Many undergraduates end up as co-authors on scientific papers and start building professional networks that foster their career across a lifetime.  We have had many undergraduates turn their summer research into a senior thesis project, even though they have not necessarily had someone from their school present at RMBL during the summer.

Our program does fill.  Consequently we encourage strongly motivated applicants, or applicants who need financial support, to submit their online application by Feb. 15 for REU applicants and by March 4 for RMBL Scholarships.  Students can apply for both sources of funds with one application.

TIBOR T. POLGAR FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Proposal deadline: Monday, February 11, 2013

The Tibor T. Polgar Fellowship program is a research program conducted in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Named in honor of the late Dr. Tibor T. Polgar, a major contributor to the early development of the Foundation, this program provides a summertime grant ($3,800 for each fellowship) and limited research funds for eight college students (both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible) to conduct research on the Hudson River. The objectives of the program are to gather important information on all aspects of the River and to train students in conducting scientific studies and public policy research.
Over the past 28 years, the Polgar Fellowship program has produced a large body of research in the Hudson River, with a concentration on the four marshes of the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve (Stockport Flats, the Tivoli Bays, Iona Island Marsh, and Piermont Marsh), compiled in the annual Polgar Fellowship reports published by the Foundation. Anyone interested in obtaining this material in order to plan projects building on the work of previous Polgar fellowships or in discussing potential research topics should contact the Foundation.

Because of the training and educational aspects of this program, each potential fellow must be sponsored by a primary advisor. The advisor must be willing to commit sufficient time for supervision of the research and to attend two meetings (orientation and final reports) with their students. Advisors will receive a stipend of $500.

Applications for a Polgar Fellowship should include:

A letter of interest in the program;
A short description (4-6 pages) of the research project, including a statement of its significance;
A timetable for completion of the research;
An estimate of the cost of supplies, travel, etc.;
A letter of support from the student’s advisor; and

We seek a motivated, creative, and focused problem-solver to join interdisciplinary projects relating to urbanization, conservation, and ecology.

The research fellow will be an active participant in project planning, data analysis, scientific publications, and must be able to work as part of an interdisciplinary research team.

Applicants should have at least a bachelor’s degree in one of the relevant environmental fields; a master’s degree is preferred.  Desirable skills include experience with interview research (particularly using NVivo), survey research, ARC-GIS software, and multivariate statistical analysis (particularly using R software).  The position will involve travel to central Massachusetts so a driver’s license is required.

The Columbia Economics Review (CER) is a student-run economics publication at Columbia University.  This year, we are excited to announce the launch of Competitive Climate, a new environmental policy competition.  We would like to invite undergraduate students from your university to participate.  Below is a brief list of requirements and expectations.  Winning applicants will have their presentations recognized by CER as well as Columbia’s Earth Institute.  If you could please forward this email to any current or former students who may be interested, we would greatly appreciate it.

The Columbia Economics Review invites groups of 2-5 undergraduates to participate in a symposium competition on the economics of US climate change legislation by submitting a policy recommendation and analysis via a 10-15 minute video presentation and a corresponding slide show or other visual aid. The team’s recommendation should analyze and discuss the economics of climate change solutions and legislation in the United States. Should the government act? How should it act? The winning team will be awarded a $500 monetary prize and will be recognized in Columbia Economics Review and by The Earth Institute.

Participants must submit:

A 10-15 minute video presentation
A transcript
A visual aid (e.g. slideshow)

Participants must also meet the following deadlines:

Proposals will be judged by both Columbia University and Earth Institute faculty, and the winning presentation will be scored on:

A well-researched discussion of the primary and secondary economic effects of the team’s proposal.
An analysis of how domestic and international political constraints affect the probability and impact of enacting the team’s proposal.
